History of the Plan

Founded by the union, for its members

The Trust was established on March 1, 1979, when the Union and five founding Trustees signed the original Agreement and Declaration of Trust. Their shared commitment was to administer and protect the health and welfare benefits that had been provided to Members since January 1, 1971.

Over the years, the Trust Agreement has evolved to meet changing legal, regulatory, and industry requirements. This has included changing the Plan's name from The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators & Asbestos Workers Local 118 Health and Welfare Plan to The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators & Allied Workers Local 118 Health and Wellness Trust Fund, and most recently converting the Trust from a Health and Welfare Trust to an Employee Life and Health Trust to preserve its favourable tax status.

While the Trustees have changed over the years, their commitment has remained the same: to manage the Plan responsibly, protect its long-term sustainability, and continually enhance the benefits available to Members and their families. Through careful stewardship and forward-thinking governance, the Trustees work to ensure the Plan remains strong, responsive, and well positioned to meet the needs of current and future generations of Members.
